Land?Use Intensity Increases Benthic N 2 O Emissions Across Three Sub?Tropical Estuaries

چکیده

Estuaries play an important role in regulating nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes to the atmosphere, but little is known about how catchment land-use changes influence benthic N2O cycling. We measured seasonal and constructed budgets three sub-tropical estuaries draining catchments with contrasting levels of intensity. Benthic habitats were a net sink minimally impacted Noosa River Estuary (?287 nmol m?2 h?1) source highly Brisbane (126 h?1). Vegetated can act as uptakes ?286 ?35 h?1 Maroochy Estuaries, respectively. significantly correlated NO3? fluxes, suggesting availability was control on fluxes. Combining flux data surface water emissions measurements showed that increased helped drive increasing water–air over intensity gradient. Overall, our results show driven both diversity sediment composition dynamics estuarine ecosystems. This highlights quality nitrogen loading need be considered order reduce greenhouse gases coastal

Residual Exchange Flows in Subtropical Estuaries

Observations of residual exchange flows at the entrance to four subtropical estuaries, two of them semiarid, indicate that these flows are mainly tidally driven, as they compare favorably with theoretical patterns of tidal residual flows. In every estuary examined, the tidal behavior was that of a standing or near-standing wave, i.e., tidal elevation and tidal currents were nearly in quadrature...

Indirect N 2 O Emissions from Agriculture

Agricultural perturbations to the global nitrogen cycle, directly and indirectly, lead to enhanced biogenic production of nitrous oxide (N2O). Direct pathways include microbial nitrification and denitrification of fertiliser and manure nitrogen that remains in agricultural soils or animal waste management systems. Indirect pathways involve nitrogen that is removed from agricultural soils and an...

Catchment land use predicts benthic vegetation in small estuaries

Many estuaries are becoming increasingly eutrophic from human activities within their catchments. Nutrient loads often are used to assess risk of eutrophication to estuaries, but such data are expensive and time consuming to obtain. We compared the percent of fertilized land within a catchment, dissolved inorganic nitrogen loads, catchment to estuary area ratio and flushing time as predictors o...

O/O measurements on benthic foraminifera

[1] We explore the applicability of paired Mg/Ca and O/O measurements on benthic foraminifera from Southern Ocean site 747 to paleoceanographic reconstructions on pre-Pleistocene timescales. We focus on the late Oligocene through Pleistocene (27–0 Ma) history of paleotemperatures and the evolution of the dO values of seawater (dOsw) at a temporal resolution of 100–200 kyr. Absolute paleotempera...

Carbon dioxide emissions from estuaries of northern and northeastern Brazil

The carbon dioxide flux through the air-water interface of coastal estuarine systems must be quantified to understand the regional balance of carbon and its transport through adjacent coastal regions. We estimated and calculated the emissions of carbon dioxide (FCO₂) and the partial pressure of CO₂ (pCO₂) values in 28 estuarine environments at a variety of spatial scales in the northern and nor...
